Dota’s depth is real, but a few role definitions and starter heroes get you contributing in weeks, not months.

These are our editor’s practical, reproducible tips — no exploits, no external tools, just better play on a normal PC.

Roles & Beginner Heroes

The essentials for Dota 2.

The five roles

Carry (farm → lategame), Mid (solo, tempo), Offlane (tanky disruptor), Soft Support (wards + save), Hard Support (position 5, buys most wards). Pick by temperament.

Beginner heroes

Carry: Sven / Juggernaut. Mid: Lina / Zeus. Offlane: Centaur / Bristleback. Support: Lion / Crystal Maiden. They teach core mechanics without micro-heavy skills.

Keys to improvement

Last-hit in a private lobby daily, buy a ward every time you’re support, and learn 3 heroes per role. Use the in-game Hero Guides for starting items.
