GTA 5 Won't Launch / Crashing / Stuck on Loading — Fixes

Step-by-step troubleshooting for the Rockstar launcher, Social Club and load-screen hangs.

Last updated 2026-09-09 · evergreen reference

Most GTA V launch and crash problems trace to three causes: corrupted files, an outdated mod/Script Hook, or a launcher permission issue. Work through these in order — the early steps fix the majority of cases.

Quick fixes first

Try these before anything heavy.

Run as admin & verify

Launch the game / Rockstar Games Launcher as Administrator. In Steam/Epic, use 'Verify integrity of game files' (or 'Scan and Repair' in the Rockstar Launcher). This resolves the majority of crashes.

Update GPU drivers

Install the latest NVIDIA / AMD / Intel driver. A clean install (remove old driver) avoids leftover conflicts.

Black screen / won't launch

Game starts but shows nothing.

Delete settings.xml

Close the game, then delete Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V\settings.xml. The game rebuilds defaults on next launch — this fixes many black-screen and resolution hangs.

Firewall / antivirus

Add both GTA5.exe and the Rockstar Games Launcher to your antivirus and firewall allow-list. Over-aggressive real-time scanning can block the launcher's network check.

Social Club failed to load

Launcher errors before the game.

Reinstall the launcher

Uninstall Rockstar Games Launcher, reboot, and reinstall the latest version. Corrupt launcher installs are a common cause of 'failed to load' messages.

Offline mode

If the Social Club login loops, try launching in offline mode once to confirm the game client itself works, then sign in again.

Stuck on loading (single-player)

Spinning dots forever.

Clear the intro & cache

Delete settings.xml (see above) and the cache files in Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V\cache. A full drive or background sync app locking files can also stall the load — pause cloud sync temporarily.

Crashes after an update

Worked yesterday, broken today.

Update Script Hook V

An outdated Script Hook is the #1 post-patch crash cause. Remove single-player mods, update Script Hook V and .NET from the official source, then re-add mods one at a time.

DirectX / redist

Reinstall the Visual C++ redistributables and ensure Windows is up to date if you see DirectX or MSVCR errors.

Online safety

Never launch GTA Online with mods active — it triggers bans and crashes. Keep a clean, mod-free install for Online.
