Subnautica 2 — Best Settings for the Best Experience
Recommended Subnautica 2 settings for a smooth, responsive experience — and which settings are not worth their cost.
Last updated 2026-09-25 · evergreen reference
Not every setting is worth what it costs. This page gives the Subnautica 2 settings that matter for how the game feels to play — responsiveness, image stability and freedom from stutter — rather than a screenshot preset. Where a setting is VRAM-dependent, the recommendation is given by card capacity, because the right value depends on your hardware rather than on the preset name.
Recommended settings
Setting, value, and why it is worth that.
Recommended Subnautica 2 settings by impact
| Setting | Recommended value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Global Illumination (Lumen) | Low/Off → Medium → Epic by tier | Turning Lumen down is worth up to 30% FPS. |
| Shadow Quality | Low → Medium → High | Second-heaviest setting after GI. |
| Texture Streaming Pool | Low (4GB) / Medium (8GB) / Epic (16GB+) | Overwhelming this pool causes cave-transition frame drops. |
| Upscaling | DLSS / FSR / TSR, Quality or Balanced | Use TSR on AMD, Intel and older NVIDIA if DLSS crashes. |
| FPS cap | 60, or 30 if unstable | Reduces peak GPU load and prevents some crashes. |
| Motion Blur & Underwater Blur | Off | Better visibility and cleaner camera movement. |
| Creature Draw Distance | Lower in busy biomes | 15–20% FPS around leviathans and crowds. |
| Storage | SSD required in practice | Removes the majority of biome-transition stutter. |
How to apply them
The order matters more than the values.
Match textures to your VRAM first
Texture settings are the only ones whose cost changes depending on your card. Setting them above what your VRAM can hold does not degrade gracefully — the engine starts swapping to system RAM, which is roughly ten times slower and produces permanent micro-stutter.
Then fix frame pacing
Decide on a frame rate target your hardware can actually hold in heavy scenes, and cap there. A stable cap feels better than a higher average that collapses during combat or traversal.
Then spend what is left on visuals
Once frame pacing is stable, raise the settings that cost little — anti-aliasing and global illumination are usually cheap relative to their visual contribution, while volumetric effects and reflections are not.
Re-test after every patch and driver
Both game patches and GPU driver updates change this picture. Keep a note of your working configuration so you can tell whether an update helped or hurt.
Usually not worth their cost
Where to cut first.
Ray tracing on mid-range hardware
Ray tracing is the single largest performance cost in most 2026 releases and is frequently the cause of stutter rather than just lower average frame rate. On anything below a high-end card, the frame-time consistency you get back is worth more than the reflections.
Frame generation below a stable baseline
Frame generation adds latency and, on smaller cards, 1.0–1.5GB of VRAM. Enable it only once the real frame rate is already stable — using it to hide a bad baseline makes combat feel sluggish.
Volumetric fog and reflections at maximum
Volumetric effects and screen-space or dynamic reflections consume large amounts of GPU overhead for changes most players do not notice during actual play. These are the first two things to cut.
Motion blur
Motion blur masks frame-time dips rather than fixing them, adds input lag, and reduces clarity. Turning it off is free.
