Terraria — How to Fix "Out of memory with mods"
What causes the Out of memory with mods error in Terraria, and the fixes in the order that works.

The "Out of memory with mods" failure in Terraria has a specific cause, and knowing it saves you from working through a dozen unrelated fixes. This page covers what the error actually looks like, why it happens, and the fixes ranked by how often they work.
What the error looks like
Confirm you are dealing with the same failure.
Recognising "Out of memory with mods"
tModLoader runs out of memory — often the mod list loads fine but the game crashes or freezes when you create or enter a world.
Why it happens
The cause determines the fix.
Cause 1
Loading the mod list and loading a world are separate memory events. A large pack can finish initialising and still fail when world generation and world data need more.
Cause 2
Running a 32-bit build, which is limited to roughly 3.5 GB of RAM.
Cause 3
Large content mods — bosses, biomes, music packs, high-resolution texture replacements, many animated sprites, or complex world generation — consuming far more than quality-of-life mods.
Fixes, in the order that works
Cheapest and most reversible first.
Use the official 64-bit tModLoader
The current default on Steam is 64-bit. If you have an old manual installation you may still be on 32-bit, which caps you near 3.5 GB. Reinstall from Steam.
Turn on the mod memory display
tModLoader can show per-mod memory consumption in the Mods menu. Enable it in settings, restart, and target the actual large contributors instead of disabling things at random.
Use the half-split method
Disable half your mods and try loading the world. If it works, the problem is in the disabled half; if not, it is in the enabled half. Repeat. This is much faster than one mod at a time in a large pack.
Split into separate mod profiles
Keep one profile per playthrough — a Calamity profile, a Thorium profile, a building profile and a lightweight multiplayer profile — instead of enabling everything at once.
Close memory-heavy applications
Browsers with many tabs, image editors, virtual machines and game launchers all reduce what tModLoader can use. Also keep required library mods even if they look small, since other mods depend on them.
How to confirm it is fixed
One successful launch is not proof.
Retest properly
Create a new world as well as loading the existing one. World generation is the memory-heavy step, so passing a load but failing a generate means you are still right at the limit.
If none of this works
What to do after the list is exhausted.
Gather evidence before asking
Collect your crash log, a DxDiag and the list of fixes you already tried. For Terraria, support will ask for all three, and a report with evidence gets a far better response than "it crashes".
Reinstall last, not first
A reinstall is the most time-consuming fix and repairs the same files that verification and cache repair handle in minutes. Try it only after the targeted fixes above have failed.
