Recognising "Black screen on launch"
Warframe launches to a black screen, sometimes with audio playing normally, or freezes before the login screen.
Why it happens
The cause determines the fix.
Cause 1
The window opened on a disconnected display or at a refresh rate the monitor will not accept — this is the case where you can hear the game.
Cause 2
A corrupt download cache, which Digital Extremes lists as the first thing to fix.
Cause 3
A proxy or automatic configuration script blocking the launcher’s connection, which produces the login-screen freeze rather than a black screen.
Fixes, in the order that works
Cheapest and most reversible first.
Press Alt + Enter or reset the display config
Alt + Enter forces windowed mode. If that fails, delete the display settings in EE.cfg so the game rebuilds them on next launch.
Verify, then Optimize the download cache
Open the launcher, click the gear icon, choose Verify and wait for it to finish, then click Optimize. This is free, takes minutes, and repairs the corrupt files behind crashes, hitches and missing textures. Do it before reinstalling 75 GB.
Untick the proxy settings
For the login freeze: open Windows Internet Options and untick both "use automatic configuration script" and "proxy server".
Switch DirectX version
In the launcher settings, try DirectX 11 if you are on 12, or 12 if you have a 6-core or better CPU and low FPS in crowds. Test both — the right choice depends on your hardware.
Disable the software DE lists as conflicts
Rivatuner, MSI Afterburner OSD, Razer Synapse and Chroma, Raptr, GeDoSaTo, Lucid VirtuWatt and Baidu IME. Also add Launcher.exe and Warframe.x64.exe to your antivirus exclusions as files, not just as a folder — some products only honour file-level exclusions.
How to confirm it is fixed
One successful launch is not proof.
Retest properly
Log in and load into your Orbiter, then enter a mission. Two crashes in the same tile indicates a cache problem; random crashes point at drivers or overlays instead.
If none of this works
What to do after the list is exhausted.
Gather evidence before asking
Collect your crash log, a DxDiag and the list of fixes you already tried. For Warframe, support will ask for all three, and a report with evidence gets a far better response than "it crashes".
Reinstall last, not first
A reinstall is the most time-consuming fix and repairs the same files that verification and cache repair handle in minutes. Try it only after the targeted fixes above have failed.
