Why is "Too Expensive!" appearing even though total XP is 32?

Any one step exceeding a cap (39 in Java older versions) triggers Too Expensive, not the total. The tool explicitly flags the offending step and re-orders to distribute cost.

Is combining books cheaper than enchanting items directly?

Always yes. The tool's optimal plan never enchants the item early; books absorb prior work penalty instead of the expensive target item.

Do Mending + Infinity conflict still?

Yes (as of 1.21 both Java & Bedrock). If you select both the tool adds a red Mutual Exclusion banner and refuses to produce a "forbidden" plan.

Can I add a second same-level enchant book to get it cheaper?

Yes — the tool allows combining Protection 4 from 2× Protection 3 books and shows which ordering is cheaper in total levels. Usually saves 5-8 levels on maxed-out pieces.

Step 1 — Choose Java or Bedrock. Anvil costs and prior-penalty caps differ. Flip the engine toggle first.
Step 2 — Pick Target Item & Enchant List. Select the target (Pickaxe, Sword, Chestplate, Boots, Helmet, Bow, Elytra, Trident, etc.) and tick every enchant you want and its level.
Step 3 — Compute Optimal Combination Order. The tool runs a branch-and-bound search across all combinations. The result shows a numbered "1→2, 1→3, 2→4" style plan.
Step 4 — Print Enchant Sheet. Print the plan and lay out enchantment books in order. The total XP bar at the bottom tells you how much sugarcane paper and cows you need.
