Death Stranding 2 — Tips & Tricks Worth Knowing
Practical Death Stranding 2 tips — the settings paradoxes, hidden options and workarounds that change how the game feels.
Last updated 2026-09-25 · evergreen reference
These are the Death Stranding 2 tips that are not obvious from the menus — settings that behave counter-intuitively, options buried in config files, and workarounds for behaviour that looks like a bug but is not. None of them are cheats and none of them require mods unless explicitly stated. Death Stranding 2 runs on the Decima (Nixxes port), so a few of these carry over to other titles on the same engine.
Tips worth knowing
Each one changes something measurable.
Back up your saves before changing anything
Local saves live in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Kojima Productions\Death Stranding 2\. Copy that folder before touching virtual memory settings or reinstalling, because a crash during a 45-minute delivery run is otherwise unrecoverable.
Turn off every overlay
Steam, Discord, GeForce Experience and RTSS all hook into the executable and conflict with the anti-tamper layer. Disabling the Steam overlay alone is enough to get past the splash screen for many players.
Upscaling actually reduces memory pressure
DLSS and FSR render at a lower internal resolution, which lowers VRAM usage — counter-intuitively, enabling upscaling can prevent out-of-memory crashes rather than make them worse.
Cut the two settings that cost the most
Volumetric Fog and Screen Space Reflections consume large amounts of GPU overhead while barely changing the game’s signature look. Lower these first.
Install on NVMe with real free space
The game streams terrain and assets continuously. A mechanical drive, or a nearly full SATA SSD, drops below the read speed the engine expects and produces hangs that look like crashes. Keep at least 50GB of overhead.
Cap the frame rate from the driver
For a walking simulator, consistent frame pacing matters more than a high maximum. Cap in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Adrenalin so pacing stays even during BT encounters.
Habits that prevent most problems
Cheap to adopt, expensive to skip.
Let shaders compile before you play
Modern engines compile shaders on the fly, and skipping that step turns into stutter every time a new asset loads. On first boot, or after any driver update, sit in the menu until compilation finishes.
Back up your saves
Find the save location for your game and copy it before making system-level changes like page file adjustments or a reinstall. Crashes during long sessions are otherwise unrecoverable.
Change one thing at a time
Pick a test scene, change a single setting, and re-run it. Changing five settings at once and hoping is the main reason players end up with a worse configuration than the default.
Verify files after every patch
Launch-day and post-patch downloads are the most common source of corrupted assets. Verification takes a couple of minutes and resolves a surprising number of unexplained crashes.
